Action Learning

“Action learning is important to me personally. So much so that I am a member of an action learning set myself. I find that it provides me with an opportunity to receive support challenge and ideas from people outside of my normal working day…”   Jean Balfour

Action Learning Sets enable leaders to learn from and with other leaders. They help create an outcome focused learning environment in a confidential setting. They build trust especially between working colleagues, not offering solutions but offering sounding boards. Jean works to create an environment that is both supportive and challenging and where live work problems are resolved. She uses different methodologies to suit the pace and stage of the group.

Action learning sets work by

  • individuals working on real work problems
  • each member having dedicated time to work on their personal development
  • member receiving feedback and challenge from other set members
  • ensuring each member has agreed actions by the end of each meeting
  • following up on actions and providing ongoing support and challenge

The action learning sets could be supported by

  • 360° feedback
  • MBTI®
  • Leadership and Influencing Styles
  • Specific project based work.

Jean has wide experience of facilitating action learning sets including both mixed men and women and women only sets.

"Taking part in the Action Learning Set with my team I was able to check out my distortions and get feedback from the whole group.  My biggest learning was to understand my responses to new situations are usual and not only my personal thinking.  Thank you for your support (continued!)" Lucy O'Meara, Adult Mental Health Services
