Workplace Diversity Networks

What are they?

They are organisational groups set up by and for minority groups within an organisation.   They might include a Women’s Network, an Asian Network, a Black Network, a Pride Network for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered staff, a Disability Network, a Parents and Carers Network...

Why have them?

  • They are part of moving to change the culture in organisations towards being more inclusive and diverse
  • They are a forum for designing and agreeing inclusive workplace policies and procedures
  • They provide a forum for establishing mentoring/coaching programmes and other development initiatives
  • They provide support and networking opportunities to minority groups within the organisation
  • They act as a recruitment tool both for providing people on the ‘milk rounds’ and attracting good people from minority groups to the organisation
  • They can be a testing ground for marketing ensuring the views of LGBT customers are represented

Jean’s approach to Networks

Diversity networks often need help to become focused on their agenda.  Jean works with a network or a group of networks to help them agree a business plan including a long term vision, clear goals and objectives for the year to come, agree how the network will run and build relationships within the network.  She can also help networks agree a confidentiality policy, membership guidelines and to secure both a good working relationship with and funding from the organisation.
